Wild Animals of Africa - Mary Toalson

Photographer Mary Toalson will take us on an African Safari to Northern Tanzania. Toalson was out in Toyota Land Cruiser 12 hours a day for 13 days. She used two camera bodies: a Canon 5D Mark II 21 mega pixel full frame digital camera and a Canon 20D 8 mega pixel digital camera.  “I mainly used a 100-400 mm zoom lens and a 28-135 mm lens for the scenery and when we got too close to the animals.”  This safari began in July 2009 at the start of the dry season. The talk will focus mainly on large mammals but will also include some of Africa’s most interesting birds. “I hope it inspires you to get out and take pictures of your own.”

Mary Toalson started taking pictures at 12 yrs. old with a Brownie Camera.  After retiring from teaching school for thirty yrs, she took a Photography Major at a local Jr. college working in the darkroom developing film and processing Black and White images. She joined the Millbrae Camera Club and held many offices including Print Chair for 7 years and President for 5 years. “I worked my way up from Basic to Intermediate to Advanced and finally to Masters in all categories.” She served as Print Chair for the Northern California Council of Camera Clubs (N4C - includes 16 clubs in Northern CA). She has attended two all day Judges Workshops sponsored by N4C to encourage new judges and to remind current judges of all of the things to consider when doing an effective photo critique.

Her photography has won many awards at the Milbrae Camera Club and others like N4C and Foto Clave (24 clubs). She received Color Print of the Year for a scenic of the Palouse at N4C. Her images have won Gold and Silver awards at both the San Mateo and Alameda County Fairs . She has sold work at many Art Fairs, the local Hallmark and UPS stores, and the gift shop at the Animal Arc Wild Animal Preserve in Reno, NV.

Her photos have been displayed at The Uptown Café on Laurel St. in San Carlos, the Hobart Gallery in San Francisco, and at the Burlingame Library. Some of her bird pictures are in a permanent display at the Redwood Shores Interpretive Center at the RWS Library.  Her  pictures have been published in Photographer’s Edge and Mid-peninsula Regional Open Space quarterly Newsletter.
